American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

"I am seeing the stress," he said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the shutdown started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second-longest shutdown in the past.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of planes in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my staff focused on the airspace, not on the finances at their households," the official said.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as other flights extending upward to the city of Oakland.
