Caelan Doris Makes Ireland Team But Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Ireland rugby team announcement news

Returning manager Andy Farrell has named skipper Doris in his Irish roster for the autumn Tests, however lock McCarthy is absent.

The captain, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to provincial training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to play against New Zealand in the US on November 1.

Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.

Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, and number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the summer tour.

Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-player squad, however Irish rugby authorities says uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".

Following facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, the team host Japan, Australia and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented Farrell, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a mostly familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 chosen with Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international wins over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the 23-year-old is additionally a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at full-back.

Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of Leinster's URC league games so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by England in Bristol previously.

The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Munster lock Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while veteran Ulster lock Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests during the tour, is set to cover for the captain should the captain fails to recover full fitness in time to play New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to the US on the following day.
