Cameron Norrie achieved the biggest victory of his professional journey by rallying from a early deficit to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had before defeated Alcaraz on two occasions, this win marks Norrie's first ever win over a current world top-ranked player.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who is now the latest English competitor in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Coming back from injury last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to embrace my performance in the second half of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the greatest success of my career, my first win over the top player and likely the strongest competitor in the sport right now."

The British player, seeded 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's dominant run of nine consecutive finals and 17 straight elite tournament successes, which marked the top run of performances in the Spaniard's early career.

Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently towards victory at the start as he sailed through the opening set. Nevertheless, the British contender steadily battled back into the match by executing with greater precision and dragging the Spaniard into extended, demanding exchanges. His relentless consistency and dependability gradually made an impact.

During large parts of the match, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm on his baseline shots. The young star appeared notably struggling executing his primary weapon, which has been the best shot in the sport for most of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 errors. Opposing him, the British player offered Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, maintaining his steadiness, fitness and penetration all match while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to advance inside the baseline and strike effectively.

After dealing for months due to a significant left forearm injury and struggles with his performance, Norrie slipped as far down as 91st in the rankings this year. Alcaraz, in spite of his remarkable achievements, is yet to figure out how to deliver his best tennis on indoor courts.
