Pat Bamford Signs With Sheffield United After Initiating Derogatory Chants About Manager Chris Wilder
The striker has joined the Championship side only seven months after leading derogatory chants targeting the team's coach, Wilder.
This experienced forward, a free agent after departing from Leeds United, has signed a contract joining the Championship strugglers through the winter. Bamford's lengthy time with Leeds was ended through agreement this past summer.
Among the player's final notable acts as a Leeds player was to lead abusive songs about Wilder amid Leeds' promotion party this spring. Now, the one-cap England international is set to play under Wilder as Sheffield United's boss aims to lift the team he loves away from the bottom places.
Past Conflict Between the Striker & the Manager
The pair had previous conflict prior to Leeds earned promotion back to the Premier League last season and United lost the promotion decider by Sunderland. The manager described Bamford as “a muppet” when the situation was different in 2018-19 and the Blades secured direct promotion whereas Leeds United missed out in the promotion playoffs.
Making Amends and Moving Forward
All seems to have been resolved with United, the league's least productive attack, in desperate need of a boost up front while Bamford hoping to rejuvenate his career.
The Wilder chant spread widely in April. A repentant Bamford along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, called Wilder the following day.
Chris Wilder commented back then: “Had a conversation with Patrick yesterday and I’ve no problem at all with it. I'm uncertain about the language from a fellow pro! However I appreciated and admired him giving me a call.
“We spent 20 minutes and similarly I talked with Daniel Farke as well and we had a half-hour chat with him and he's a great person, a class act. Back in my playing days we would dish it out and take it and that’s an integral part of football across all levels, even on Sunday league. I've got absolutely no issue. I'm fine with the situation and I told him that to Pat.”
Recent Career Challenges
Bamford featured in 18 games with Leeds United in the previous campaign but the ex- Nottingham Forest, Chelsea FC and Boro striker has faced difficulties with injury over the past few seasons.
