The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned within a psychic prison constructed from the memories of the villain Henry. The search for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode has them relive a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the key to defeating him once and for all.
Heads Up: This article reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.
Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern
Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the act wasn't just a fight for life.
Similar to other plot points this season, the truth about the events in the tunnel is detailed in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission
This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to sell to the Soviets, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern is that employee.
Unlocking the Mystery
Considering what is revealed about his research, the case almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, which triggered the awakening of his powers—powers he would later pass on to the kids under Brenner's care.
Another possibility, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he struggles with the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in the past.
Confronting Terror
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory highlights how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to become stronger.
This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the endgame conflict that awaits.
