During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
