The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in English Test Series Squad
England have opted for a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether the venue pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected squad, indicating there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to miss out if the spinner makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Seamers
The England coach had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five previous Tests.
During these games, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers is still the probable decision.
Spin Options Considered
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has opted to stick with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” he said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't let my secrets out so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
